Shipping Dangerous Goods

Does your item fall under the dangerous goods category? Dangerous goods are hazardous materials that might pose danger, either to the property they are held in or to the health and safety of the staff handling them. Objects that cause toxic fumes, fires, explosions, or leakages when exposed to vibrations, statics and variations in temperature and pressure during transit are deemed as dangerous goods. There are a total of 9 classes of dangerous goods. Each class requires different administration and packing, and failure to do any incorrectly would result in your shipment being rejected and sent back to you.

The process of shipping dangerous goods can be taxing as it requires a lot of administrative work. For those who may encounter difficulties shipping their dangerous goods, here are some things to take note of when shipping dangerous goods:

  1. Make sure to identify the dangerous good correctly. As mentioned earlier, there are 9 classes of dangerous goods. Each class has different restrictions and will require a different method of handling. Hence, make sure to identify your dangerous good correctly.
  2. Pack your goods the right way. Different goods have different restrictions. For instance, you can only ship 100ml of liquid or two batteries per shipment. Once you identify which classification of dangerous goods your item falls under, you will need to pack them accordingly to avoid having your shipment rejected.
  3. Your item might not be able to be shipped by air. Some goods are strictly prohibited from being shipped through the air and would need to be shipped via road, train, or ship instead.
  4. Items that are not dangerous goods may contain a dangerous component. Hence, be sure to check your item carefully to make sure you declare your shipment correctly to avoid having it sent back to you.
